Borneo Nature Foundation Indonesia (BNF Indonesia) is the Indonesian branch of Borneo Nature Foundation International, a conservation organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring the rainforests of Borneo through science, community-led conservation, ecosystem restoration, and environmental education. Building on more than 25 years of conservation experience, the organisation works to safeguard one of the world’s most important tropical ecosystems while ensuring that both nature and local communities can thrive together.
BNF Indonesia delivers an integrated conservation approach centred on scientific research, biodiversity monitoring, peatland restoration, wildlife protection, habitat conservation, environmental education, and community empowerment. Its programmes focus on conserving endangered species such as orangutans, gibbons, and clouded leopards, restoring degraded peat-swamp forests through large-scale reforestation and hydrological restoration, reducing wildfire risk, and generating scientific knowledge to inform conservation policy and sustainable land management.
Recognising that successful conservation depends on local leadership, the organisation works closely with Indigenous Peoples, local communities, government agencies, universities, and international partners to develop sustainable livelihoods, strengthen environmental stewardship, and build long-term resilience. Through education programmes, youth engagement, citizen participation, and collaborative conservation initiatives, BNF Indonesia helps empower communities to become active guardians of Borneo’s unique natural heritage.
As part of Borneo Nature Foundation International, BNF Indonesia combines global scientific expertise with locally led action to protect globally significant biodiversity, restore critical peatland ecosystems, mitigate climate change, and create a future where healthy forests continue to support wildlife, local communities, and the wellbeing of the planet.
