SAWO (Sabah Women’s Action-Resource Group) is a Malaysian non-governmental organisation dedicated to advancing women’s rights, gender equality, and social justice in Sabah. Established in 1985, the organisation works to empower women and marginalised communities through advocacy, education, capacity building, and community-based programmes that promote equal participation in social, economic, and political life.

SAWO addresses a broad range of issues affecting women and girls, including gender-based violence, leadership development, economic empowerment, sexual and reproductive health and rights, legal awareness, and access to justice. The organisation also works with youth, indigenous communities, civil society organisations, and government stakeholders to strengthen gender-responsive policies and foster more inclusive communities.

Through research, public awareness campaigns, training workshops, policy advocacy, and grassroots engagement, SAWO seeks to challenge discrimination and promote human rights across Sabah. The organisation believes that sustainable development can only be achieved when women and all members of society have equal opportunities, meaningful participation in decision-making, and the ability to live free from violence and discrimination.

Today, SAWO remains one of Sabah’s leading women’s rights organisations, collaborating with local, national, and international partners to build a more equitable, inclusive, and gender-just society.
