Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) is an Indonesian science-based non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting the country’s terrestrial and marine ecosystems while promoting a future where nature and people thrive together. Established in 2014, YKAN works across Indonesia to conserve biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and support sustainable development through collaborative, evidence-based conservation initiatives. With programmes spanning 12 provinces, the organisation partners with governments, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, academic institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector to safeguard Indonesia’s natural heritage.
YKAN implements conservation programmes through four strategic approaches: protecting critical ecosystems, promoting sustainable practices, supporting effective environmental policies, and advancing innovative conservation financing. Its work focuses on safeguarding forests, mangroves, peatlands, coral reefs, and marine ecosystems while addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, sustainable fisheries, regenerative livelihoods, and natural resource governance. By combining scientific research, practical conservation, and long-term partnerships, the organisation helps create resilient landscapes and seascapes that benefit both people and nature.
Beyond conservation, YKAN is committed to empowering local communities as key stewards of Indonesia’s natural resources. The organisation supports community-led conservation, strengthens sustainable livelihoods, promotes environmental education, and works to ensure that economic development and ecosystem protection advance together. Through collaborative and non-confrontational approaches, YKAN seeks practical solutions that balance environmental sustainability with social and economic well-being.
Through science, innovation, and partnership, Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara is helping build a more sustainable Indonesia where healthy ecosystems continue to support biodiversity, climate resilience, and prosperous communities for generations to come.
